Matthew Douglas, Marje Len Murusalu and Tim Plamper will donate their art in a benefit show Genesis: Art for Haiti. The exhibition takes place at the Rag Factory, London and ends with an auction on 11th April. Curators: Tomas Hein and Bashi Kolibarova.
Two months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, over thirty artists have gathered
together and donated their work for this unique exhibition to raise funds for the
Disasters Emergency Committee appeal.
The selection in Genesis: Art for Haiti will include photography, painting, video and
installation. Funding will be raised by selling the artworks at a public auction on the
11th of April. Photographer Seba Kurtis has donated new work, and filmmaker Leah
Gordon will show her new documentary 'Atis-Rezistans: the Sculptors of Grand Rue'.
Artists have also come up with creative ways to raise funds throughout the exhibition, so
special edition catalogues, and DVD´s with the video works will be available at the front desk.
Since the devastating earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale hit the Haitian capital,
Port-au-Prince, over €60m have been raised by the DEC. These donations have helped to
provide temporary housing, distribute food and water, set up mobile clinics, and hygiene
facilities. Efforts are still far from providing Haitians with decent humanitarian conditions and
security remains a problem in the capital. It is important to keep up humanitarian aid to
organizations that are working in Haiti. Genesis: Art for Haiti also works as a platform to raise
awareness on Haiti´s situation, and inspire others to engage in humanitarian aid through
creative practice. Our weblog has served to provide links to important information,
organizations and other websites, where people can access information regarding progress
and other events related to Haiti.
The private view will be a good opportunity for you to exchange and gather ideas, meet the
artists and organizers, and engage directly with the project, creating a social platform for
creative minds, producers, curators and people with a genuine interest in charity.
At the auction you will have a chance to bid on art from some amazing local, and international
artists including – Richard Beenen, Matthew Douglas, Petr Dub, Lorenzo Durantini, Tomas
Hein, Velika Janceva, Seba Kurtis, Elisabeth Molin, Vera Mulyani, Marje Murusalu, Tim
Plamper, Chantal Riekel, Joanna Scislowicz – amongst others. All of the funds raised will
be donated to the DEC´s Haitian Earthquake Appeal (Registered Charity No:.1062638).
