/..Creative activity, that is - the actions of an artist can be split (crudely) into two types : The forced and the unforced../

15th-18th November 2008
STATE: brings together works from 15 international artists with different perspectives and with works using diverse media. It will be shown during November 14th - 18th in the basement of Shoreditch Town Hall.
The title STATE: has several parallel interpretations. It is an entity formed from a collection of individuals, a political system, a statement and a state of being. It is a construction representing the present time - the state of NOW.
STATE: is a platform created to deliver an opportunity for the artists who wish to present an exploration of their burgeoning works. It is the beginning of a dialogue, for the artists themselves and between their creations and the public. The function of the STATE: institution is to conquer the encapsulation of the isolated individuals in modern times.
The exhibition is meant to be a starting point for future connections and projects between the participants. The function of STATE: is to create a system that is more than the sum of its parts. The STATE: itself is new, and will mature as the individuals evolve.
As the Shoreditch Town Hall hosts the first exhibition by the group, the anxiety state driven from its site specific features can be illustrated by a tagline acquired from Paul Auster's quote - "Breathing Yourself into a Coffin of Ice".
In addition to the show at Shoreditch Town Hall, a homepage at www.state-artists.com delivers more information about the project and the participating artists. The website aims to provide an ongoing forum for the artists and the collective after the exhibition has closed.
